Lakemont Cemetery, Lakemont, New York

Paul Bowles died of heart failure at the age of 88 on November 18, 1999 at the Italian Hospital in Tangier, Morocco. Several days later, his body was shipped to New York City for cremation and eventual burial in the family plot beside his parents and grandparents.  The funeral did not occur until almost one year later on November 1, 2000, in Lakemont Cemetery in the rural town of Lakemont (in Yates County), in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York.  Lakemont is located several miles north of Glenora, New York, where Paul Bowles had spent summers as a child at his paternal grandparents' home overlooking Seneca Lake.

During the informal funeral, there were short readings from Paul Bowles' works, and then each friend laid one red rose in his grave and said a few words of remembrance. On November 19, 1999, the New York Times published a full-page obituary of Paul Bowles. In his last will Paul Bowles directed that both his and Jane's names be engraved on his tombstone with only the dates of their births. Jane Bowles is actually buried in the San Miguel Cemetery in Mlaga, Spain.

Joseph A. McPhillips III, the executor of the Estate of Paul Bowles, places a CD recording of Paul Bowles's music into the grave, along with some soil from Morocco, flowers and Moroccan Dirhams. McPhillips had brought Paul Bowles's cremated ashes by air to upstate New York after retrieving them at the Manhattan funeral home.

Although Paul Bowles had instructed in his last will that Jane Bowles's name be engraved on his tombstone, her remains are actually in Mlaga, Spain in San Miguel Cemetery.
