EARLY PORTRAITS, Part Two

 

These early photographs are of Paul Bowles during one of his visits to Fez, Morocco in September 1934, two photos taken in 1932, and two taken in New York in the mid-1930s riding on the Third Avenue "El" subway train; a 1949 photograph by photographer Karl Bissinger, taken in Marrakech; and Paul Bowles sometime during the 1960s.

Paul Bowles took a temporary job in Fez in September 1934 with Colonel Charles Williams, seated at the center; on the right is Bowles's friend Harry Dunham. Bowles and Dunham subsequently traveled to the south of Morocco, visiting Marrakech, Ouarzazate and Taroudant.

The photographer Karl Bissinger visited Morocco in 1949 and shot this photo of Paul Bowles in Marrakech. Mr. Bissinger made additional photographs of Marrakech for a travel article on Morocco for the legendary Flair magazine. Bissinger was a friend of Jane and Paul Bowles in New York during the mid-to-late 1940s, before the Bowleses moved permanently to Morocco. During his illustrious career in photography, Mr. Bissinger provided many photographs for Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and Town & Country magazines, among others.

Legendary figures photographed by Karl Bissinger have included Marlin Brando, Richard Avedon, Montgomery Clift, Alec Guinness, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Katherine Hepburn, John Wayne, Gary Cooper, Tallulah Bankhead and James Baldwin. Among Paul Bowles's friends, Mr. Bissinger has photographed Tennessee Williams, Gore Vidal, Truman Capote and Jean Cocteau.

Karl Bissinger's book (edited by Catherine Johnson), The  Luminous Years: Portraits at Mid-Century, with an Introduction by Gore Vidal, was published by Harry N. Abrams, Inc. (New York) in late 2003.
