The photographer Karl Bissinger visited Morocco in 1949 and shot this photo of Paul Bowles in Marrakech. Mr. Bissinger made additional photographs of Marrakech for a travel article on Morocco for the legendary Flair magazine. Bissinger was a friend of Jane and Paul Bowles in New York during the mid-to-late 1940s, before the Bowleses moved permanently to Morocco. He has also done photographs for Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and Town & Country magazines. Legendary figures photographed by Karl Bissinger have included Marlin Brando, Richard Avedon, Montgomery Clift, Alec Guinness, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Katherine Hepburn, John Wayne, Gary Cooper, Tallulah Bankhead and James Baldwin. Among Paul Bowles's friends, Mr. Bissinger has photographed Tennessee Williams, Gore Vidal, Truman Capote and Jean Cocteau. Karl Bissinger's book (edited by Catherine Johnson), The Luminous Years: Portraits at Mid-Century, with an Introduction by Gore Vidal, was published by Harry N. Abrams, Inc. (New York) in late 2003. |
